When SCE Cuts the Power: Protecting Your Refrigerator and Freezer Through a Simi Valley PSPS Event

If you live up in Santa Susana Knolls, along the ridge in Wood Ranch, or anywhere backing up to the open hillside near Rocky Peak and Corriganville, you already know the drill. Red flag warning goes up, the wind forecast looks ugly, and a day or two later you get the text: Southern California Edison is shutting off your power as a precaution. Sometimes it’s six hours. Sometimes it’s two days.

It’s not the outage itself that kills appliances — it’s what happens in the hour after the power comes back.

The outage part is the easy part

A dark fridge for a few hours isn’t a crisis. The rule of thumb: an unopened refrigerator holds safe temperature for about 4 hours. A full chest or upright freezer holds for roughly 48 hours; a half-full one closer to 24. Keep the doors shut, and most PSPS events — even the two-day ones — won’t cost you your groceries if you plan ahead. I keep a couple of frozen gel packs and a cheap appliance thermometer in my own freezer specifically for this, and I tell every customer up on the hillside to do the same.

What actually generates my service calls is the restart.

The real damage: dirty power on restoration

When SCE re-energizes a circuit after a PSPS, or when a generator gets connected and disconnected without a proper transfer switch, the voltage that hits your house isn’t always clean. Compressors are inductive loads — they draw a big surge of current the instant they try to start, and if that start-up surge collides with a voltage spike or a brownout-level dip during restoration, you get exactly the failure I see most: the compressor’s start relay or start capacitor cooks itself trying to kick the motor over on bad power.

The other common casualty is the main control board on newer refrigerators — the ones with digital displays, ice-and-water dispensers, and Wi-Fi. Those boards have low-voltage components that don’t tolerate surges well. I’ve pulled boards with visibly scorched traces after a PSPS restoration on Sub-Zero and Samsung units alike, both less than four years old.

Here’s the pattern from my job log after the last two significant wind-event PSPS periods:

  • Refrigerator compressor start relay/capacitor failure: 9 calls, $180–$260 each

What actually protects the appliance

  1. Unplug the fridge and freezer if you know a PSPS is scheduled and you’ll be gone. If you’re home, you don’t need to — the risk is the restoration surge, and you can manage that instead.
  2. Put a whole-appliance surge protector on the circuit, not just a cheap power strip. A dedicated appliance surge protector (the kind that plugs into the wall and the fridge plugs into it) runs $25–$50 and has saved more control boards than anything else I recommend.
  3. If you run a portable generator, use a proper transfer switch. Backfeeding a circuit by plugging a generator into a dryer outlet — I’ve seen it — sends power both directions on the grid and produces exactly the dirty, unregulated voltage that fries compressors. It’s also dangerous to SCE line workers. Get a licensed electrician to install a transfer switch if you generator regularly; it typically runs $500–$900 installed and pays for itself the first time it prevents one bad restart.
  4. After any PSPS longer than 24 hours, listen before you look. If the compressor is cycling on and off rapidly, or you hear a clicking/humming sound without the compressor actually starting, that’s a failing start relay — shut it off at the wall before it burns out the compressor windings entirely, which turns a $200 relay job into a $600+ compressor replacement.
